TAG: antibiotic resistance, bacteria, animals, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), resistance genes

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global problem that impacts on public health, animal health and welfare. It is a phenomenon involving antibiotic products, bacterial species, resistance genes and resistance mechanisms. This research group has been conducting studies on this health problem with a one health approach for several years. The activity of the group includes both field research, e.g. prevalence studies, and in vitro studies on resistance characteristics of indicator and pathogenic microorganisms; molecular epidemiology studies are also carried out, which provide information on the factors leading to the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. Among the various activity focuses: urinary tract infections, which are diseases for which high amounts of antibiotics are prescribed; the study of alternative products to antibiotic drugs, such as oils and honeys; the monitoring of indicator bacteria (E. coli, MRSA, MRSP) in domestic animals and wildlife; the spread of AMR in hospitals; the exposure of people to AMR determinants in the animal farming environment. The team works with groups belonging to various sectors of the department (pharmacology, surgery, pathology, Non-Conventional Animals Centre).
