Evaluation of One Health initiatives
TAG: one health, evaluation frameworks, transdisciplinarity
"One Health" approach (OH) is considered a "key" approach to addressing and managing health problems in their complexity. OH foresees the collaboration among experts from different sectors/disciplines in order to improve human, animal and environmental health, and represents an increasingly used approach at the international level. However, there is a need to adopt validated and universally recognised methods for the assessment of OH initiatives and their associated benefits (health, environmental, economic, social). As part of various international networks (NEOH, Network for Ecohealth and One Health; JPIAMR-Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance), this line of research aims to develop and apply methods for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of OH initiatives. OH evaluation protocols can be applied to different disciplines (from animal health to clinics and pharmacology, from livestock production to the welfare of farmed animals, from transactional medicine to human-animal relations, from eco-epidemiology to public health, etc) and allow the production of qualitative and quantitative data (e.g. OH-ness, and OH-index) useful to make an ex ante and ex-post comparison of any initiative and project, and to assess the added value related to the application of the OH approach.
